Jon Praed

As a founding partner of Internet Law Group, Jon has been at the forefront of the Internet community's legal battle against unsolicited bulk e-mail. Over the past five years, Jon has obtained judgments on behalf of some of the largest ISPs in the United States against dozens of spammers, totaling nearly $10 million, and has successfully defeated every effort to discharge such debts in bankruptcy. Most importantly, Jon has collected millions from spammers on behalf of his clients, and has helped shape the law against spam, including a significant summary judgment decision in America Online v. LCGM, 46 F. Supp. 2d 444 (E.D. Va. 1998).

In addition to his anti-spam work, Jon's practice includes a broad range of issues related to the Internet, including cyber-security, advising start-up entities, providing general counsel to established Internet companies, and helping clients track pending legislation related to the Internet.

Prior to forming Internet Law Group in February 2000, Jon practiced law with Latham & Watkins, in California and Washington, D.C.

In addition to his broad experience in private practice, Jon has extensive government service. In 1995, he was tapped by Congressman David McIntosh (2nd Indiana) to serve as the first Chief Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Government Reform and Oversight Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs. During his tenure in that position, Jon helped to successfully steer a regulatory moratorium bill through the floor of the House of Representatives and conducted oversight investigations into the operations of 26 Federal departments and agencies.

Jon received his law degree from Yale Law School in 1989. At Yale, Jon was elected to the Yale Law Journal, was a moot court debater (winning Yale's Potter Stewart Prize in spring 1988, and Catholic University's inter-mural Sutherland Cup in spring 1989), and served as treasurer of Yale's Federalist Society.

Jon earned his B.A. in political science from Northwestern University in 1986, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. At Northwestern, Jon also studied extensively in the hard sciences -- computer programming, thermodynamics, quantum physics, differential equation calculus, mechanics and organic chemistry -- and completed his degree in three years.

Prior to entering private practice, Jon clerked for U.S. District Court Judge John D. Tinder, in the Southern District of Indiana, and for Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard of the Indiana Supreme Court. Prior to law school, Jon also served as a Governor's Fellow to Indiana Governor Robert D. Orr.
Jon is admitted to the bars of Washington, D.C., Virginia, California (inactive), and Indiana.
